🎉Big news below!
Hey all! Those who have been keeping a keen eye on my instagram (@dr_mattbarrett) will know that Ive dropped some veeery exciting news… but heres the backstory:
If i could summarise how I consistently ranked first at med school, it would be the following few steps:
Have high yield notes that force you to study actively and ensure you understand the content
Consistently cover daily, weekly and monthly revision goals
Go over your content but constantly upgrade it with mnemonics/memory hacks/new information whilst SIMULTANEOUSLY removing the stuff you don’t need.
Aim to repeat ALL of your content >3x in the run up to your exams (the principle behind spaced repetition)
But theres a problem…. its easier said than done.
From the students I regularly work with, I can guess that many of you fall into the following traps:
❌ Theres too much content to cover if you haven’t built the skills above to do this efficiently
❌ You find it hard to spot examinable content
❌ You don’t come across the high yield mnemonics and study hacks that make it easier to remember specific content
❌ The mnemonics you use are useless because you don’t yet understand the content.
❌ You haven’t been able to read widely enough to gauge the likely 20% of content that makes up 80% of the exam (Pareto principle)
❌ You struggle, or don’t have the time, to simplify concepts so you can encode them into your brain for longer (Feynman technique)
❌ You find it hard to focus on studying without getting distracted
❌ You’re struggling to repeat your content >3x in the run up to your exam (spaced repetition)
…So, in an effort to help you all out, I’m very excited to share my first high yield study guide:
🚀NEVER FORGET CARDIOLOGY - Launch Updates!
My brand new guide launches VERY soon! When?… well you’ll have to keep your eyes pealed!
I’ve been overwhelmed with the amount of messages across social media! So much so that I haven’t been able to reply to everyone - so sorry about that…. I thought I’d tell you more about it here:
Whats included:
✅ 59 pages on everything cardiology
✅ Single page summaries to help you Pomodoro your way through content efficiently
✅ Saturated with mnemonics and memory hacks alongside…
✅ Concise explanations to actually understand and retain content for longer
✅ Dual encoding with both AI generated and original illustrations to give your brain more ways to retain content.
✅ Popular MCQ answers and differentiators for each topic
🔥AND theres more… but I’ll be telling you about that very soon!
Ultimately, I have designed this in the way that consistently helped me rank first at medical school (whilst doing MORE alongside medical school) AND tailored to the clinical experience Ive gained through working as a doctor for the last 3 years.
I want this guide (and the others that follow) to help you study smarter and to unlock more time, so you can reinvest it in your personal growth, the CV you need to build to be competitive in your future medical/surgical applications, and doing more of the things you love!
What have I been up to?
I cant believe how far things have progressed since my last article here. Two big things since last time we spoke…
✅ Moved to Australia - considering the political climate in the UK I have no intention of rushing into the sacrifices of clinical training and instead have been aiming to future proof my career with skillsets of our new age - digital media, content creation, coaching and entrepreneurship! I am loving my time in the state of Victoria (Melbourne) and have been meaning to tell you more about it!
✅ Ive grown approx 400,000 followers across instagram and tiktok! I absolutely love helping you all make studying and retaining medical knowledge that bit easier - please do drop me comments if theres any content you want help with.
Where am I heading?
🤔 GP training? Like many healthcare professionals learn the hard way, I’ve come to see that I value more in life than the sacrifices that medical/surgical training demand (and looking at the other side… I personally don’t feel like its worth it yet). Im still wanting to continue medicine, but the only way I feel I can cope with it, is by pursing a specialty that is short, pays well, and importantly, allows you to work as few shifts as possible to give more time to do MORE alongside medicine. Currently I either locum, or enter GP training… but we’ll see how things go!
🤔 Building my youtube channel? Im now on the tube! (check me out here!) To be totally honest, im struggling to find the 8-16 hours it takes me to edit 15 mins of long form content - considering its going to take a long time to build an audience there, I feel like I can only do it when Ive built the revenue to justify hiring an editor.
🤔 MORE resources?! Watch this space.
🤔 Staying in Australia - my girlfriend and I have no intention on coming back yet. So much so, that we’re applying for our permanent residency visa already!
🤔 Restarting MedEd Mondays - If you caught my last newsletter, you’d know that I was focusing my efforts on the highest leverage activities I could, which is sadly why I can’t be consistent here… YET. If anything, I’ve learned over my journey of balancing medicine with side hustling/content creation/clinical entrepreneurship, is that time is our most valuable asset.
Looking back over my blogs, I really want to get this up and running soon. For now, I hope that the MedEd vault and my daily content helps you out!
🔓 The MedEd Vault: is under construction!
The MedEd vault is currently undergoing a face-lift! But don’t worry - its going to be back very soon!

💪Thats all for now! See you in 1/52!
